What is JEJURI FESTIVAL all about?

The Khandoba Temple of Jejuri is a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Khandoba that situated on a hill in the town of Jejuri, Maharashtra, India. It is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in Maharashtra. Turmeric represents gold to the worshipers of Jejuri. Thus, throwing turmeric represents the wealth and riches that Lord Khandoba should bestow upon them.
Many people believe that the tradition originated from the traditional Indian tradition of applying turmeric to the bride and groom on the eve of their wedding day, as the festival commemorates Lord Khandoba's wedding rite and great union with his wife Malsha.
Many believe him to be a descendent of the Sun God Surya. Several artworks show him riding a horse with a bowl full with turmeric powder, precisely like the Sun God. As devotees make their way up the hill, they are showered with haldi (turmeric). Because of this practice, the path takes on a distinct yellow hue. The "sonyachi Jejuri" or golden Jejuri occurs three times per year.
