Holi, the festival of colors, is one of the most vibrant and profound celebrations in India. For me, experiencing Holi in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, which includes Mathura, Vrindavan, Nandgaon, and Barsana, has been an incredible journey of colors, culture, and emotions. Over the years, I have captured the essence of Braj Holi five times, from 2019 to 2024. Each visit has been unique, filled with new discoveries, fresh perspectives, and unforgettable moments.
The Journey Begins in Govardhan
Every time I visit Braj for Holi, my base is always Govardhan. Staying there feels like being at the heart of the celebration. From Govardhan, I take shared auto-rickshaws to Barsana and Nandgaon. These rides themselves are an experience, surrounded by fellow travelers, devotees, and locals, all eager to immerse themselves in the festivities.
One of the highlights of Govardhan is the Govardhan Parikrama Marg, a sacred path that devotees walk around the Govardhan Hill as an act of devotion. The entire route is filled with positive vibes, spiritual energy, and an atmosphere of serenity. Temples dot the path, offering moments of reflection and worship. The journey is also accompanied by the playful presence of monkeys. These monkeys are friendly yet mischievous, adding a lively charm to the experience. It’s essential to be cautious with belongings but also enjoy their amusing antics.
Barsana: Laddu and Lathmar Holi
Barsana is famous for its Lathmar Holi, where women playfully beat men with sticks, and for the Laddu Holi, where sweets are thrown as a part of the celebration. The Radharani Temple in Barsana is an iconic place that radiates an amazing vibe. The Samaj rituals, the light, and the collective energy of people make it a photographer’s paradise. However, shooting here can be challenging due to the intensity of the colors and the crowd, so I always ensure my camera is well-wrapped and protected.
Nandgaon: The Heart of Celebration
From Barsana, the journey continues to Nandgaon, specifically the Nand Baba Temple, where the main Holi celebration takes place. This is where the spirit of the festival truly comes alive. The colors, the music, the dance, and the sheer joy of people celebrating together is an experience that words can barely capture. The streets of Nandgaon are equally vibrant, offering countless frames of everyday life immersed in festive fervor. Over the years, I’ve created over 100 of my best images from this place.
Vrindavan: Phoolon Ki Holi and Divine Vibes
Vrindavan holds a special place during Holi. The Phoolon Ki Holi, celebrated at Pagal Baba Ashram, is one of the most iconic events. Seeing widows, who are often marginalized, joyfully celebrating with colors and flowers is a sight that stays with you forever. Documenting this in 2023 was a deeply moving experience. Another significant place is the Banke Bihari Temple, where the Holi vibe is truly extraordinary. Though it’s a crowded and closed space, the energy and the spiritual atmosphere are unparalleled.
Challenges and Cherished Moments
Shooting Holi in Braj is not without challenges. The celebration, especially in Barsana, can be intense and is often not safe for women due to the rough play. It’s an experience where men can move more freely, but caution is always advised. Despite this, the people of Mathura and the surrounding areas are warm and welcoming. Their hospitality, combined with the incredible food and sweets of Mathura, makes the entire journey wholesome and memorable.
A Festival Like No Other
Holi in Braj is more than just a festival; it’s a cultural phenomenon that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. It’s about colors, traditions, joy, and community. For me, it’s also about capturing stories, emotions, and moments that speak of the essence of life and celebration.
Every year, Braj Holi gives me something new, something profound, and something unforgettable. It’s a place that calls me back, year after year, to witness and document the vibrancy of life in its most colorful form.
